Rotary International District 9112 embarked on a week-long celebration of sports and camaraderie, aptly named ROSFEST, from February 28th to March 7th. This vibrant festival, encompassing a diverse range of twelve sporting activities, aimed to bolster the physical and mental well-being of its members while fostering unity and fellowship both within the Rotary community and beyond. The event served as a dynamic platform to promote the values of Rotary International, emphasizing the importance of a healthy lifestyle while building stronger bonds among members and the wider community. The opening ceremony, held at the Rotary Centre in Ikeja, GRA, formally inaugurated the week-long festivities, setting the stage for a spirited competition and a celebration of sportsmanship.

ROSFEST represented a continuation of an initiative established the previous year under the banner of District 9110, a legacy carried forward by the newly formed District 9112, which came into existence on July 1st, 2024. The festival emphasized not just the competitive aspect of sports, but the inherent benefits of physical activity and mental engagement, contributing to a holistic approach to wellness. While prizes and awards were indeed part of the festivities, the core motivation lay in fostering an environment of healthy competition, encouraging participants to prioritize their physical and mental strength. This proactive approach to health and wellness underscores the Rotary’s commitment to the overall well-being of its members.

Rotarian Olufemi Adenekan, the Pioneer District Governor for District 9112 (2024-2025), highlighted the festival’s significance, tracing its origins to the torch-lighting ceremony held two months prior and the preceding golf tournament. He emphasized the continuity of the initiative and its overarching goal of promoting physical fitness and mental fortitude among Rotarians. This commitment to holistic well-being reflected in the broad spectrum of activities offered during ROSFEST, catering to diverse interests and skill levels. The festival was designed not just as a competition but as a platform for Rotarians to connect, engage, and prioritize their overall well-being.

Rotarian Alozie Nsirimobi, Past President of the Rotary Club of Gbagada and Chairman of the Rotary Sports Activities Committee (2024-2025), echoed this sentiment, underscoring the festival’s role in fostering camaraderie and promoting a healthy lifestyle. He emphasized the importance of the Rotary’s active role in caring for its members, positioning the sports festival as a practical manifestation of this commitment. ROSFEST provided an ideal opportunity for Rotarians to come together, engage in friendly competition, and prioritize their physical and mental wellness, reinforcing the organization’s dedication to the holistic well-being of its members.

The meticulously planned schedule of events catered to a broad array of sporting interests. The initial phase of the festival, held on March 1st, featured indoor games such as draughts, snooker, ayo/olopon, scrabble, and chess, offering opportunities for strategic thinking and mental agility. The subsequent days brought forth a wave of dynamic physical activities, including table tennis, tennis, swimming, sprinting, relay races, tug-of-war, and football, culminating in a grand awards dinner on March 7th. This diverse range of activities ensured that participants of all athletic inclinations could find an event that suited their interests and abilities.

The ROSFEST opening ceremony was graced by the presence of Ayo Akinfemisoye, Principal Sports Officer, representing the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, highlighting the event’s recognition and support from local authorities. Furthermore, United Nigeria Airlines played a key role as a sponsor, further solidifying the festival’s standing within the community. Raphael Uchegbu, the Chief Commercial Officer of United Nigeria Airlines, expressed the airline’s enthusiasm for their partnership with Rotary, pledging continued support for future events. The airline’s generous contribution of flight tickets as prizes, redeemable for travel to any destination served by United Nigeria Airlines, added an exciting dimension to the awards, rewarding winners with the opportunity to explore new horizons. This collaborative effort underscored the importance of community partnerships in supporting initiatives like ROSFEST, showcasing the shared commitment to promoting health, wellness, and community engagement.
