At the recent London Business School Worldwide Alumni Celebration 2024 in Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of good governance, transparency, and accountability among leaders. Sanwo-Olu, represented by Commissioner Folashade Medeben, highlighted that these principles are crucial for effective leadership capable of uplifting communities and creating a lasting legacy. The event’s theme, “Building a Legacy in Nigeria: Turning Challenges into Opportunities,” encouraged participants to reflect on their roles as leaders in shaping Nigeria’s future. The celebration acknowledged the impact and achievements of London Business School alumni, reinforcing the significant influence they wield across various sectors.
In his remarks, Sanwo-Olu recognized the London Business School’s 60-year history of cultivating leaders who excel in their professional endeavors while contributing to their communities. He noted the robust alumni network in Nigeria, which showcases that success is attainable in fields like finance, technology, healthcare, and public service, despite the nation’s numerous challenges. He identified Nigeria’s distinct blend of vast opportunities and significant hurdles, maintaining that these challenges should not be viewed as insurmountable barriers but as springboards for innovation and growth.
The governor pointed to Lagos State as a prime example of how challenges could be transformed into opportunities that stimulate development. He stated that with strategic leadership, a clear vision, and effective collaboration, obstacles can pave the way for significant legacies. Sanwo-Olu stressed the necessity of fostering economic growth as a fundamental aspect of this transformation. He elaborated on initiatives such as special economic zones and investments in digital infrastructure, which are aimed at diversifying the economy to withstand both local and global shocks.
Moreover, Sanwo-Olu recognized that the responsibility for driving sustainable economic growth cannot rest solely on the government. He asserted that active participation from the private sector and the establishment of robust partnerships are essential. In this context, he called attention to the pivotal role that the London Business School alumni community can play as industry leaders who contribute to the nation’s economic development.
The British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, echoed these sentiments, expressing pride in the educational ties between Nigeria and the UK. He underscored the role of education in creating a lasting legacy and urged alumni to apply their knowledge in ways that enrich their communities. Baxter praised Nigerians for their ability to identify and seize opportunities amidst challenges, reinforcing the message that education serves as a catalyst for meaningful change.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Akintayo Sanwo-Olu, President of the London Business School Alumni Club Nigeria, celebrated the institution’s legacy of advancing leadership, innovation, and a global network. He expressed pride in the club’s members, who he believes are agents of change capable of tackling significant challenges in business and society. He reiterated the importance of shared experiences and education in empowering alumni to create impactful solutions within their respective industries, further illustrating the enduring impact of the London Business School on a global scale.
