Fiifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ghana, delivered an impassioned message to party supporters in the Volta Region during a rally in Hohoe. He urged them to actively promote the NDC’s campaign narratives centered on hope and change in anticipation of the upcoming 2024 general elections. Kwetey emphasized that winning the December elections would present a vital opportunity to rectify the numerous grievances that have accumulated during the past eight years of governance. He strongly stressed the importance of retained parliamentary seats, particularly highlighting that the NDC should not have lost the Hohoe seat in the previous 2020 elections. His call to action encouraged supporters to engage with their communities, emphasizing the need for everyone to recognize the significance of the electoral process as a means to reset the nation’s course.
During his address, Kwetey characterized Hohoe as a symbol of pride and political power for the NDC. He underscored the necessity of unity and commitment among party members in the lead-up to the elections, acknowledging that while the party had room for improvement, it was unacceptable for loyalists to abandon the cause. Kwetey criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserting that the party’s victory in the forthcoming elections would imply that citizens could be swayed by monetary incentives, even in the midst of pronounced economic hardship. He expressed concern about reports of citizens in the Volta Region being required to present identification at entry points, indicating a growing sense of political oppression that the NDC finds alarming.
Adding weight to Kwetey’s message, Mr. Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Hohoe, urged the electorate to disregard divisive campaign rhetoric and focus instead on developmental issues. He appealed for strong community backing for himself and former President John Mahama, reinforcing their shared vision for the constituency’s needed advancements. Tsekpo’s call for focus on development illustrates the party’s commitment to addressing the tangible needs of the community, enhancing their electoral appeal amidst the challenging political landscape.
Support from party leadership was evident, with Mr. Mawutor Agbavitor, the Volta Regional Chairman, emphasizing the unity and collective focus of the NDC as they prepare for the electoral “battle.” Agbavitor’s assertion of solidarity underlines the party’s strategic stance as they seek to galvanize support across the region. Similarly, Mr. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, the Ho West MP, encouraged voters to support Tsekpo to facilitate a clean sweep for the NDC across the Volta Region’s parliamentary seats, reiterating the importance of every vote in achieving this goal.
In a parallel appeal, Mr. Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Adaklu MP, voiced a commitment to ensuring that none of the party’s members will face oppression during the electioneering process this year. He strongly discouraged voters from engaging in the practice of voting “skirt and blouse,” or splitting their votes between different parties for presidential and parliamentary elections. Agbodza highlighted former President Mahama’s pledges to complete critical infrastructure projects like the Eastern Corridor Road and the Fodome campus of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), indicating a focus on fulfilling promises that resonate with voter concerns and aspirations.
The rally, which drew hundreds of enthusiastic supporters, culminated in a symbolic walk, embodying the collective determination and unity of the NDC as they gear up for the elections. With active participation from key figures in the party, the event served to energize supporters and solidify a communal commitment towards achieving victory in the upcoming elections. The gathering not only reinforced the party’s messages of hope and development but also highlighted the collective resolve to engage actively with the community and address the pressing issues facing the Volta Region. As the December elections approach, the NDC is keenly focused on mobilizing support, emphasizing development-driven narratives, and ensuring that the party’s foundational values resonate with the electorate.
