Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has reiterated his strong dedication to the state’s free and compulsory education policy, underscoring it as a critical element of his administration’s strategy for future growth and development. During a recent assembly with public school principals and headteachers at the Jolly Nyame Stadium Gym Hall in Jalingo, he made it clear that his government has no intention of reversing this policy. By emphasizing the intrinsic value of education for advancing all sectors, he aims to foster an environment conducive to learning and overall progress in Taraba.

In his commitment to improving educational resources, Governor Kefas announced plans to distribute over 100,000 school uniforms, bags, sandals, and various learning materials to students throughout the state. This initiative is part of a broader effort to deepen the effects of the free education policy, which he believes will increase student enrollment. He urged teachers to engage in active communication with parents to ensure that every child is registered in school, thereby maximizing the impact of the education initiative across Taraba.

Acknowledging the importance of teacher welfare, Governor Kefas indicated that his administration is considering promotions for deserving educators. To facilitate this, he has instructed the Ministry of Education to form a committee tasked with evaluating teacher performance and making recommendations for promotions. Furthermore, he assured that all outstanding salary arrears owed to teachers would be settled by the end of the year. The governor also suggested that running costs for schools might be reviewed, indicating a commitment to improving the financial resources available to schools to support their operations.

The governor’s initiatives have garnered support from key figures within the education sector. Dr. Augustina Godwin, the Commissioner for Education, praised the transformative efforts of Governor Kefas, noting that his leadership has shifted Taraba from an educationally disadvantaged position to one where it can compete on a national scale. She attributed the increase in student enrollment to the implementation of the free and compulsory education policy and encouraged the governor to expedite the promotion process for teachers, thereby boosting their morale.

Mrs. Rabi Samuel, the Acting Chairperson of the Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board, along with Mrs. Elizabeth Zakaria Yoruta, Acting Executive Secretary of the Taraba State Post Primary School Management Board, echoed similar praises. They recognized the governor’s substantial influence on revitalizing the education sector and pointed out the renewed enthusiasm among teachers that has emerged in response to his initiatives. The collective voices from these educational leaders highlight a growing optimism about the state’s educational future under Governor Kefas.

The gathering also featured cultural performances by the Taraba State Art Council and local musicians, celebrating the state’s advancements in education. Reports indicate that with sustained attention on education and the ongoing support of his administration, Governor Kefas is positioning Taraba State as a potential model for free and compulsory education across Nigeria. Through his efforts, Governor Kefas aims not only to improve educational access but also to uplift the overall quality of education, ensuring a brighter future for the children of Taraba State and the nation.
