The Bono East Regional Minister, Mr. Francis Owusu Antwi, has announced a significant development initiative focused on the Techiman Central Market. This project, part of the government’s 24-hour economy program, aims to transform the market through extensive expansion and rehabilitation. The primary objective is to enhance business activities within the market, leading to accelerated socio-economic growth and development in the region. The improvements are also expected to generate more job opportunities for local residents, contributing to improved livelihoods and economic stability.
The Techiman Central Market holds a crucial position in regional trade, serving as a commercial hub not only for local traders but also for those from neighboring countries, including Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Ivory Coast. Its strategic location and vibrancy make it a focal point for economic activity, and the planned upgrades are intended to further solidify its role as a major trading center. The renovations will focus on modernizing market facilities, improving access roads and lorry terminals, and constructing modern restroom facilities. These enhancements are designed to attract more investment, both domestic and international, thereby strengthening the local economy and increasing its contribution to national development.
Beyond the market’s physical improvements, the government has also prioritized infrastructure enhancements in the surrounding area. A critical project is the reconstruction of the Techiman-Sunyani highway, a major transportation artery essential for the efficient movement of goods and services. This upgrade will significantly improve connectivity between Techiman and other key areas, facilitating trade and boosting economic activity. The government is also engaging with local chiefs and community members to secure land for the construction of a regional airport, further enhancing accessibility and promoting tourism development in the Bono East region.
Transportation infrastructure is receiving substantial attention, as evidenced by the government’s “Big Push” road infrastructure program. A contract has been awarded for the construction of a ring road specifically designed for heavy-duty trucks. This dedicated route aims to alleviate traffic congestion in the Techiman Central Business District, where the presence of heavy vehicles often disrupts the flow of traffic. This strategic infrastructure development will improve the efficiency of goods transportation and enhance overall traffic management within the city.
In addition to infrastructure development, the government is investing in educational facilities in the region. Plans include the construction of a two-story classroom block and a 2,000-seat dining hall for Krobo Senior High School. This investment in education underscores the government’s commitment to human capital development, providing students with a conducive learning environment and enhancing educational opportunities in the area. These improvements will contribute to a better educational experience for the students and elevate the overall quality of education in the region.
Local leaders are also actively advocating for further improvements. Nana Owusu Gyare II, Akwamuhene and Acting President of the Techiman Traditional Council, has called for the upgrading of inner-city roads in Techiman. He has emphasized the urgency of constructing the ring road to address the persistent traffic congestion caused by heavy-duty trucks in the central business district. This collaborative approach between the government and traditional authorities demonstrates a shared commitment to addressing local needs and pursuing development initiatives that benefit the community. The focus on infrastructure upgrades reflects a broader strategy to enhance transportation networks, support economic growth, and improve the quality of life for residents of the Bono East region.
