The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) convened a solemn ceremony at Rafik Hariri International Airport on a somber day to honor the memory of Warrant Officer Class 1 George Ayim, a Ghanaian peacekeeper who passed away from cardiac arrest on February 4, 2025, while diligently serving his duty as part of the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission. The ceremony served as a poignant tribute to Warrant Officer Ayim’s dedication and sacrifice in the pursuit of peace and stability in southern Lebanon.
Warrant Officer Ayim’s passing was a profound loss to his family, friends, the Ghanaian Armed Forces, and the entire UNIFIL community. His commitment to peace and security spanned over two decades of service in the Ghana Armed Forces and three deployments to Lebanon as part of UNIFIL. He was a respected and admired member of the Ghanaian Contingent, bringing not only his military expertise but also his musical talents as a bass guitarist to his peacekeeping duties. The memorial ceremony was attended by a distinguished gathering that included UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Lieutenant-General Aroldo Lázaro, representatives from the Lebanese Army, officials from the Ghanaian Embassy, and members of UNIFIL’s Ghanaian Contingent. The presence of these individuals underscored the deep respect and appreciation for Warrant Officer Ayim’s service and the shared commitment to the mission he so faithfully served.
