The Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) community and its alumni network have expressed strong support for the institution’s decision to expel Chimamaka Goddy-Mbakwe, a student found guilty of assaulting a lecturer, Dr. Chukwudi Okoye. The incident, which stemmed from a disruption of Ms. Goddy-Mbakwe’s TikTok video recording by Dr. Okoye, quickly gained notoriety after a video of the assault circulated widely on social media. The university’s swift response, initiating an investigative panel and subsequently expelling the student, has been lauded as a necessary measure to uphold discipline and deter future misconduct.
The university’s official expulsion letter, dated February 13, 2025, cited a violation of Regulation 4 of the institution’s disciplinary code as the basis for Ms. Goddy-Mbakwe’s expulsion. The severity of the sanction underscores the university’s commitment to maintaining a respectful and conducive learning environment. The letter, signed by the acting Registrar, Victor I. Modebelu, explicitly stated the immediate nature of the expulsion and directed Ms. Goddy-Mbakwe to vacate the university premises and return any university property in her possession.
Alumni of UNIZIK have been particularly vocal in their support of the university’s decision. Ikechukwu Umeh, President of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Alumni Association, emphasized the importance of the disciplinary process followed by the university. He highlighted the involvement of a duly constituted committee that meticulously reviewed the case and recommended expulsion, ensuring that the action taken was not arbitrary but based on established regulations. Mr. Umeh further noted the widespread concern among alumni regarding the incident and their collective condemnation of Ms. Goddy-Mbakwe’s actions. He stressed the importance of maintaining good character and behavior while being a student at UNIZIK, emphasizing that such conduct deviates significantly from the values and principles instilled in the university’s graduates.
The alumni’s commendation of the university’s decision reflects their commitment to preserving the institution’s reputation and ensuring that its students uphold the highest standards of conduct. They view the expulsion as a crucial step in sending a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated and that the university will take decisive action to maintain a respectful and orderly learning environment. The alumni’s support further underscores the importance of accountability and the responsibility of students to adhere to the established rules and regulations of the institution.
Ozi Okoli, the President of the Theatre Arts Department Alumni, echoed Mr. Umeh’s sentiments, praising the management’s decisive action. He expressed satisfaction that the university followed due process by establishing a disciplinary panel and conducting a thorough investigation. Mr. Okoli also revealed that Ms. Goddy-Mbakwe’s testimony before the panel contradicted the events depicted in the viral video, further solidifying the justification for her expulsion. He emphasized the importance of respect for elders within the African societal context, highlighting the gravity of Ms. Goddy-Mbakwe’s actions. The Theatre Arts alumni’s strong advocacy for expulsion demonstrates their commitment to upholding the values and principles of their department and the university as a whole.
The collective response from the university’s administration and its alumni network demonstrates a unified stance against student misconduct and a commitment to maintaining a respectful and conducive learning environment. The expulsion serves as a powerful deterrent, conveying the message that violence and disrespect towards faculty members will not be condoned. It also reaffirms the university’s dedication to upholding its disciplinary regulations and ensuring that students are held accountable for their actions. The incident has sparked a broader conversation about student behavior and the importance of fostering a culture of respect within academic institutions.
