A joint meeting between the Northern Governors Forum and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council is currently taking place in Kaduna, with the main objective of tackling the deep-rooted security and developmental challenges facing Nigeria’s northern region. Key participants at this significant gathering, which is being hosted at the prestigious Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, include Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa. The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Muhammadu Yahaya, opened the proceedings by urging collaborative action among regional leaders to address the multitude of crises affecting the area, including insecurity, economic hardship, environmental concerns, and youth discontent.

Governor Yahaya accentuated the importance of unity and collective resolve in overcoming the pressing challenges besieging the region. He identified critical issues such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, farmer-herder conflicts, and widespread poverty as significant hurdles that need addressing. Yahaya stated that a united front must be maintained in the face of adversity, declaring that the strength drawn from collaboration is essential to create avenues for prosperity in the northern part of Nigeria. He expressed strong support for ongoing efforts with the Federal Government and pertinent agencies to facilitate necessary interventions for those affected by these multifaceted problems.

To combat these varied threats, the governors’ forum proposed an array of solutions that included sustaining gains against criminal activities, studying the Coalition of Northern Group’s Security Committee report, and enhancing cooperation with security agencies along with civil society entities. Emphasis was placed on investments in education and skills development to foster job creation. The governors also aimed to support small and medium enterprises while promoting investment opportunities that can provide direct benefits to northern states. Creating strategies for agricultural support, ensuring rural security, and advancing agro-allied industries were deemed essential for the region’s sustainable growth.

The call for regional cooperation extended beyond immediate security concerns, with its participants recognizing the necessity for comprehensive reforms within institutions guiding governance in the area. Governor Yahaya reminded attendees of the broader responsibilities shared among leaders to create a vision for a prosperous and sustainable Northern Nigeria. He highlighted that the northern populace is relying on their leaders to guide them through these tumultuous times, advocating for unity and audacity as essential qualities to initiate the positive changes required for the community’s advancement.

Earlier in the meeting, Kaduna’s Governor, Senator Uba Sani, also welcomed the delegates and the Chief of Defence, emphasizing the critical need for collaborative action against regional challenges. Sani noted the commitment of the northern governors towards fostering peace and shared prosperity. He commended President Bola Tinubu’s proactive measures to combat insecurity, highlighting the establishment of a Joint Military Command and Operational initiatives like Operation Fansan Yamma. His remarks underscored the importance of solidarity amongst northern leaders to effectively confront ongoing threats and foster a secure and prosperous environment for all.

Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who chairs the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, also spoke at the meeting, underscoring the pivotal role traditional leaders play in ensuring peace and stability within their jurisdictions. In reflecting on the assembly of notable governors including Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Borno’s Prof. Babagana Zulum, and others, he reiterated the collective responsibility of both political and traditional leadership to create conducive conditions for development. The overarching sentiment among leaders at this meeting pointed to a recognition that unity is fundamental to fostering resilience and ensuring the region can navigate through complexities towards a brighter and more prosperous future.
